An event this weekend will offer free bicycle helmets for kids, games, information and activities all about public safety resources in Lawrence and Douglas County.
The Back to School Safety Fair is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 at South Park in downtown Lawrence.
Folks can get an up-close look at the Lawrence Police Department’s armored rescue vehicle and get inside Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical’s smoke trailer, which simulates the conditions of a smoky home for exit practice.
Pros will be onsite to perform car seat checks, and there will be food trucks.
Douglas County Emergency Management Emergency Management will bring back its “Wheel of Misfortune” activity.
There will be a friendly “cram the cruiser” competition to collect school supplies. The annual drive pits the LPD, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and LDCFM against each other to see who can collect the most donations.
Numerous other organizations will be represented at the fair as well. Learn more on the City of Lawrence’s website at lawrenceks.org/safety-fair.
Last year’s fair marked the return of the annual event for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
