Big Boy, the massive steam railroad locomotive, will pass through Union Pacific depot in North Lawrence on Thursday.
The 85-foot-long, 380-ton Iron Horse is nearing the end of an eight-week tour across nine states, running from Sept. 8 through Oct. 23.
Big Boy stopped in Lawrence twice in 2021. It will not stop here this year, but the Lawrence station will be on its route from Kansas City, Missouri to Topeka.
Big Boy will spend the night at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, arriving at approximately 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15. It will be on view there all day Wednesday as well.
It will then depart from Kansas City at 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, and it’s expected to stop in Topeka at 12:15 p.m. Its pass through the depot, 402 N. Second St., will be within that window.
Follow the locomotive’s progress on this map once it gets moving.
