A Día de los Muertos community altar and celebration in North Lawrence will pay tribute to late grandparents and elders.

Rooted in Mexican culture, Día de los Muertos — or Day of the Dead — is a holiday in which people commune with their deceased loved ones and honor their memories with celebrations. Communities and families set up ofrendas, or altars.

The 2024 Día de Muertos celebration is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Common Ground Garden Incubator at John Taylor Park, 200 N. Seventh St.

Setup will begin at 9 a.m., and attendees are encouraged to bring mementos of their late loved ones to add to the community altar or to set up their own altars.

The event is free to attend. Hot chocolate, tamales and sweet bread will be served.

The community celebration in Lawrence is hosted by Somos Lawrence and Lawrence Percolator, according to the Facebook event page.
