The Lawrence Farmers Market will open for the season Saturday, April 12 with a lot of new things, including at least five new vendors, and some continuing programs, such as Double Up Food Bucks for SNAP recipients.
A new online feature will allow folks to find their favorite vendors and learn about others, check where they’ll be at the market and when they’ll be there.
The market’s interactive map shows booth locations and includes some background information about the vendors and what they have to offer. That’s available at lawrencefarmersmarket.org/market-map.
New at the helm is Lyndsey Fowks, market manager, “bringing a wealth of experience in community engagement, education, and sustainable food systems,” according to a news release from the market.
Fowks, from De Soto, holds a master’s degree in communication and has a background in program management, and she’s passionate about fostering connections between local farmers, artisans and the Lawrence community, according to the release. She’s currently taking sustainable agriculture classes at Johnson County Community College to deepen her connection to local food systems, according to the release.
“As the new Market Manager, I’m excited to bring my enthusiasm and expertise to the longest-running farmers market in Kansas,” Fowks said in the release. “I’m eager to support vendors, engage with customers, and further initiatives that make fresh, locally grown food accessible to all!”
The market is also bringing back the Double Up Protein Bucks program every week, alongside Double Up Food Bucks. The programs match every $1 that recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program spend with another $1 for up to $25 on proteins, such as eggs, meats, dairy and beans, or on fresh fruits and vegetables, respectively.
The market is open from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. rain or shine each Saturday starting April 12 at 824 New Hampshire St.
