KU has invited community members to welcome the summer solstice with a free tour of the university’s Native Medicinal Plant Research Garden, which is part of the Field Station.

The tour will be led by Kelly Kindscher, a senior scientist at the Kansas Biological Survey and Center for Ecological Research and a professor in the KU Environmental Studies Program.

Kindscher “will give an overview of the research plantings and highlight important species,” according to a news release from KU.

Visitors can expect to see the “research plantings, a large native plant demonstration garden and the KU Community Garden,” which fill the 5-acre space, according to the release. The garden also features work from the Douglas County Extension Master Gardeners, who assist in garden upkeep.

The tour will start at 7 p.m. Friday, June 20. Although the tour will wrap up before dark, guests are welcome to stay until the sun goes down around 8:40 p.m.

The garden is located at 1865 East 1600 Road; see here for directions and a map. Its pathways are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act stipulations, according to the release.

For those who cannot attend Friday, the land is open to the public all year from dawn to dusk, and tours are hosted semiannually.
