Keystone pipeline operator says faulty welding and other problems led to the Kansas oil spill

Canadian oil company TC Energy said Thursday that faulty welding contributed to an “instantaneous rupture” in its Keystone pipeline that gushed hundreds of thousands of gallons of extra sticky tar sands crude oil onto Kansas native prairie, cropland and into a creek.

This bald eagle was photographed hanging out in a cottonwood tree below the Bowersock Dam that is located on the Kaw River in Lawrence. Eagles overwinter up and down the Kaw and Missouri Rivers, and quite a few of them now make their nests in Kansas.

Rock salt saves lives by helping tires grip icy roads. It avoids broken bones when homeowners use it on slick surfaces. But it also costs Americans billions in corroding cars and bridges. It adds so much sodium to drinking water in some places that it can affect people’s health.
