Lawrence City Commission approves safe haven ordinance increasing local protections for transgender people

Ruby Johnson said she began to live as herself when she came out in Lawrence. She asked city commissioners Tuesday evening to adopt a safe haven ordinance to create more protections for transgender and gender-nonconforming people. And they did, 5-0.

Liberty Hall Video to close, shift rentals to new model; candy store to take over the space

Liberty Hall Video on Sunday will close the physical space that currently houses its hundreds of DVD cases, though movie rentals will still be available. The space at the corner of Seventh and Mass will be taken over by a new candy store.
