A former Lawrence police officer charged with raping a woman in his patrol vehicle will now face a jury early next year after mediation failed to lead to a plea agreement.

A Lawrence man and former foster father who was found guilty of lewd fondling and sexual intercourse with his biological daughters was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years.
Douglas County’s top prosecutor says her office has not yet issued any notices for violating laws regulating the sale of certain forms of THC products, and Lawrence business owners would like to keep it that way.
But some proprietors fear that “One or two of these people are going to ruin it for everyone else.”
Prosecutors agreed Tuesday morning to allow the case against a former Lawrence police officer charged with raping a woman in his patrol vehicle to move to criminal mediation.
“Good God where to start, it sounds really bad,” began the police interview of a Lawrence father and former foster parent who was found guilty on Thursday of lewd fondling and sexual intercourse with his biological daughters beginning when one was 14 and the other was 10.

Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez has launched an online survey to gauge how the public feels about in-person court hearings and jury trials amid record numbers of COVID-19 cases.
Eighty percent of the people incarcerated in the Douglas County jail are there pretrial — meaning they haven’t been convicted and are presumed innocent. That’s just one takeaway from the inmate population data dashboard from the sheriff’s office.
