Free State High School orchestra students to perform with KC Symphony at free concert in Lawrence

Lawrence Public Schools report forecasts drop in Black high school students enrolling in AP courses

As Black high school students’ enrollment in Advanced Placement courses is expected to drop by 26% this fall, most of their peers will increase their AP enrollment by 21% to 41%. The disparity raises questions about whether or not all students feel empowered to take these college-level courses.

A light breeze Thursday evening blew the tassels of Free State High School’s graduating seniors as some supporters donned winter coats – an unusual site for a late-May ceremony. With temperatures hovering in the high 50s, family, friends and faculty filled the football stadium to honor Free State’s 25th graduating class.
