Historic resources staff members with the city will hold an open house this weekend to seek feedback on possibly listing Watson Park on the Lawrence Register of Historic Places.
A city board has finally approved historic markers to pay tribute to Rick “Tiger” Dowdell and Nick Rice, teens who were shot and killed by Lawrence police officers in 1970, though the board wants the shooters named on both markers.
The former Jayhawk Bookstore/McLain’s Bakery building has been demolished to make way for KU’s entrepreneurship hub. The project team has shared more details about what the hub will entail and renderings of the planned building.

KU Endowment is looking to demolish the building that formerly housed Jayhawk Bookstore and McLain’s Market on KU’s campus to make room for the business school’s new entrepreneurship hub.
Plans to build 15 row houses next to the former Borders building in downtown Lawrence got a 3-2 nod of approval from the Historic Resources Commission Thursday evening, and the city is considering the former book store building for a City Hall annex.
Lawrence’s Historic Resource Commission on Thursday voted 2-2 against a plan to build 15 row houses next to the former Borders book store downtown. The developers can appeal the denial.
Developers will work with architects to try to make the design of 15 proposed row houses better fit in with the area near Seventh and Rhode Island streets in downtown Lawrence.
