Desensitization to violence and social media usage among youth are contributing to an influx of alleged gun threats aimed at Lawrence schools, according to the school district and police.
Engage Douglas County has recognized the Billy Mills Middle School SRO, a Perry-Lecompton High School student and the Baldwin City Police Department with its three Engaged in Action awards for this year.
Although Lawrence school board members spoke highly about the Lawrence police officers serving as SROs, some have voiced concerns about the potential for students whose mental health may be struggling to interact with the criminal justice system — particularly at the middle school level.
