Lt. David Ernst said the circumstances of the crash were under investigation, but it appeared that one southbound vehicle, an SUV, veered off the road to the east.

The SUV struck a bus shelter, which appeared to be shattered on the sidewalk nearby.

At least one of the people in the vehicle had to be extricated, Ernst said. Both were taken to area hospitals.

A witness at the scene said both people were conscious shortly after the crash, before first responders arrived. Numerous residents in the area heard the noise of the vehicle hitting the bus shelter, followed a couple minutes later by sirens, around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Haskell Avenue near 21st Street was closed to traffic while first responders investigated. Ernst said just before 7 p.m. Tuesday that he was not sure when the road would reopen.
