A driver was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead following a head-on crash in the 800 block of North 1800 Road just after 6 p.m. Friday, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
The area is just east of the intersection with Kansas Highway 10, near Heritage Baptist Church.
“According to preliminary information, the driver of a westbound vehicle crossed the center line and struck an eastbound vehicle head-on,” George Diepenbrock, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said Friday evening. “Medics transported the driver of the westbound vehicle from the scene.”
The driver of the eastbound vehicle was examined at the scene for injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, Diepenbrock said.
North 1800 Road was closed east of the K-10 interchange to East 900 Road for the sheriff’s office’s accident reconstruction team to investigate the crash, Diepenbrock said.
The sheriff’s office had not released the names of the people involved in the crash as of 7:45 p.m. Friday.
“No further information is available at this time pending investigation of the crash and notification of the family,” Diepenbrock said in an 8:20 p.m. email update.
