Lawrence police have arrested a 26-year-old Lawrence man on suspicion of murder, according to a brief news release sent Monday evening.

Police were called to an apartment in the 2500 block of West Sixth Street at 7:26 p.m. Monday “where officers encountered the suspect and a mortally wounded woman,” according to the release.

The victim was declared dead at the scene by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical first responders, the release stated.

“The suspect and victim were known to each other. This investigation is ongoing. No further details will be released pending the notification of next of kin.”

The Douglas County jail booking log showed the arrest of a man at 2500 W. Sixth St. Monday evening who was being held without bond on suspicion of first-degree murder.

The man’s name does appear on the jail’s booking log; however, as police noted in the media release that further details would not be released pending notification of next of kin, we are not publishing his name at this time.

No further information was immediately available Monday night.

All arrestees and defendants in criminal cases should be presumed not guilty unless and until they are convicted.
