A Lawrence Times reporter observed what appeared to be two vehicles involved in a crash in the 600 block of East 31st Street, which is between Haskell Avenue and Louisiana Street. It appeared that one vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.

George Diepenbrock, a spokesperson for DGSO, said deputies were dispatched to the crash at 10:36 p.m. Wednesday.

“Upon arrival, a Dodge Ram pickup truck was fully engulfed in flames, and all three occupants of the Dodge had been removed prior to it igniting,” he said. “The other vehicle, a Chevrolet Malibu, had one occupant, the driver, who was deceased upon deputies arriving. A preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Chevrolet Malibu crossed the center line and struck the Dodge pickup truck head on.”

The three occupants of the Dodge truck were all 19-year-old men, he said.

One of them was transported to LMH Health with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening; two other were transported with serious injuries, one to Overland Park Regional Medical Center, and one by helicopter ambulance to the University of Kansas hospital, Diepenbrock said.

“The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team is conducting a full investigation of the crash,” he said.

The sheriff’s office had not released the man’s name as of Thursday morning.
