Lawrence gardeners, rejoice: The city’s Saturday compost pickups and yard waste dropoffs resume this weekend.
The Wood Recovery and Compost Facility — 1420 E. 11th St. — will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 4 for folks to self-load compost and woodchips, and to drop off yard waste materials, according to the city.
The plan is for the facility to reopen at the same time each Saturday through mid-December, except for holiday weekends, according to the city. Last year, the city had to end woodchip distribution in June because it ran out.
The facility takes cash only, and please don’t bring bills larger than $20, the city reminds. Here’s a quick guide to pricing, from the compost facility’s website:
Yard waste dropoff:
- Small load – $10
- Large load – $10
- Extra large load – $20
Self-loaded material:
- More than 20 gallons – $10
- Less than 20 gallons – free
City-loaded material:
- 1 scoop – $10
- Limit of 3 scoops per visit

You can also check the calendar on that page to double-check that the Saturday events are continuing as planned. Call the facility at 785-832-3026 or email recycling@lawrenceks.org for questions.
Here’s a short video by the city, which explains more about the facility and how it works:
