Local hoopsters will have the opportunity this weekend to support a good cause and see how they measure up against the competition at the 2nd Annual Willie D 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.

All proceeds from the tournament will go to the Primetime Ballerz Foundation, an organization providing financial support to youth scholars and student athletes in the community.

The nonprofit organization was created by the Dotson family in memory of Willie Dotson III, a longtime Lawrence coach and mentor who died unexpectedly from undetected heart disease in March 2021.

“So far we have been able to give four scholarships,” said Nicole Dotson, Coach Willie’s widow and one of the founders of the organization. “We hope to carry on Willie’s legacy by providing access to sports and extracurricular activities to kids who might otherwise not have the means.”

The deadline for early bird registration is Friday, but teams may sign up until the tournament kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 29 at Bishop Seabury Academy, 4120 Clinton Parkway Frontage.

Early online registration for a team of four players is $60, which guarantees a spot in the competition. If openings are still available Saturday, registration for each team is $75.

Scholarship applications, volunteer opportunities and more information about the Primetime Ballerz Foundation can be found on the website, primetimefoundation.com. Donations are also gratefully accepted.
