A transformer blew and knocked out power for parts of downtown Lawrence late Wednesday.

McKenzi Ezell, fire medical data analyst with Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, said a transformer near 6 E. Ninth St. had blown, causing the sound of an explosion.

Power was out on the east side of Massachusetts Street from Ninth Street to City Hall. There was no damage to anything other than the transformer and the power line, Ezell said.

According to Evergy’s outage map, about 160 customers were without power as of 9:45 p.m. Crews had been assigned but were not yet on the scene for the outage, first reported at 8:51 p.m.

Temperatures late in the evening were still in the upper 80s.

The outage hit Lawrence City Hall, but not the nearby Riverfront building, where the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Commission was able to relocate and continue its meeting.
