The Kansas Jayhawks made their 48-17 win over the Missouri State Bears look easy with a stellar second half Friday night and started their season 1-0.
Junior running back Devin Neal, a Lawrence High alum, scored KU’s first touchdown of the 2023 season on a 48-yard run.
The Jayhawks went into halftime up 17-10, and the Bears were never able to recover.
Junior cornerback Cobee Bryant intercepted the ball in the fourth quarter and Neal scored again to bring the Jayhawks’ lead to a comfortable 41-17. Senior cornerback Kwinton Lassiter, a Free State alum, got another pick, and junior running back Sevion Morrison fought his way into the end zone to increase the lead to 48-17.
A few familiar Jayhawks from the basketball team also showed up to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in support.
The game was the first of head coach Lance Leipold’s third season leading the Jayhawks.
The Jayhawks next face Illinois at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8 in Lawrence. They’ll head to Reno to face Nevada at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. See the football team’s full season schedule at this link.
