Person killed, two injured in crash northeast of Lawrence

A person was killed and two others were injured in a crash on U.S. Highway 24-40, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred around 5:20 p.m. Saturday, and U.S. Highway 24-40 was shut down between East 1600 and East 1675 roads as of around 6:30 p.m. Saturday, according to a social media post from the sheriff’s office. Law enforcement asks drivers to avoid the area and find an alternate route.

Medics took two people to area hospitals, and one person died in the two-vehicle crash, according to the post.

“The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the details and cause of the crash. Officers with the Lawrence Police Department assisted in the initial response to the crash,” DGSO said in the post.

No further information was immediately available Saturday evening.
