Faculty members of the University of Kansas department of theatre and dance, joined by a guest choreographer, will present work in a variety of dance styles at the upcoming University Dance Company Fall Concert.
Student-choreographed works by Jayhawk Tap Company will also be part of the show, which includes 47 students, according to a news release from the department. Works will be in styles including hip hop, ballet and modern/contemporary.
“Several of the works convey unique interpretations of a ‘mythos’ theme buoyed by the Department’s award-winning scenography,” according to the release.
Featured faculty choreographers are Ashley Brittingham, Michelle Heffner Hayes, Shannon Stewart and Maya Tillman-Rayton. They will be joined by regional guest choreographer Logan Pachciarz, according to the release. Pachciarz is the co-founder and co-artistic director of Moving Arts and previously performed with Twyla Tharp, Boston Ballet and Kansas City Ballet.
Among works in the show, Heffner Hayes, KU professor and the concert’s producer and choreographer, will present “a restaging of her 2007 modern/contemporary work, Cradling Persephone, a retelling of the Persephone myth re-envisioned as a survivor narrative,” according to the release.
“Not all dance has a narrative, but it is fascinating to see what unfolds when story or text is interpreted through dance,” Heffner Hayes said in the release. “Movement contains multitudes.”
Lawrence local students who will perform in the show include Cassidy Dunn, sophomore pre-nursing major, who will dance in “Beautiful Decay”; Nina Katz, sophomore dance major, who will dance in “Field Notes on Survival”; and Madi Seelye, sophomore dance major, who will perform in “Cradling Persephone” and “Ragged but Right,” according to the release and lineup.
Showtimes are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5. Performances will be at Crafton-Preyer Theatre in Murphy Hall, 1530 Naismith Drive.
