Lawrence community members and members of city staff gathered Saturday morning to celebrate the opening of the Lawrence Transit Central Station at Bob Billings Parkway and Crestline Drive.

The station opened in January, and the city announced Friday that the Greyhound bus stop is moving there from downtown Lawrence, effective Monday.

Speakers at the event included Mayor Bart Littlejohn; Adam Weigel, transit and parking manager for the City of Lawrence; representatives from the Chamber and KU; the chair of the Public Transit Advisory Committee; and Tyler Kimball, of Monarch Glass Studio, who created the several works of blown glass art that are incorporated into the site.

Meanwhile, some transit drivers, members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1754, held signs with messages such as “Hold up your end of the bargain” and “If your bus driver isn’t safe neither are you.” They declined to speak with a reporter.
