Three people were killed in a crash near the Jefferson County line north of Lawrence, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday near North 1941 Diagonal Road and North 2100 Road in Douglas County, according to Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical’s PulsePoint app. North 1941 Diagonal Road is also U.S. Highway 24-59.

The highway was closed in both directions Wednesday afternoon for the investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek an alternate route for the next several hours,” according to a brief news release.

As of Thursday morning, the Kansas Highway Patrol was still working to notify families before posting a crash report with more details and the names of those who died.
