The students of the University Dance Company will be joined by special guests from Kansas City Aerial Arts for their spring concert.
In this iteration of the annual spring concert, “students and choreographers examine the ideas of world-building, connection, and suspense through the artform. Ballet, contemporary, hip hop, and jazz provide uplift and stir creative souls in this repertoire concert,” according to a news release from the department.
Kansas City Aerial Arts, choreographed and directed by Meghan Spencer, “will have patrons on the edge of their seats with a high-flying hybrid aerial/dance work,” according to the release. Spencer choreographed the piece “Life Like Water” for this concert, according to the release.
More than 50 students will perform, supported by many more behind the scenes. Students from Lawrence who will be featured in the concert include Cassidy Dunn, sophomore pre-nursing student, and Madi Seelye and Elizabeth Wellman, both sophomore dance students, according to the release.
KU faculty choreographers Maya Tillman-Rayton, Claire Buss and Ashley Brittingham will be featured, as will a piece by Class of 2023 graduate Olivia Pennell, according to the release. The Jayhawk Tap Co will also present two works.
“This concert is certainly a highlight of the spring term in the Department of Theatre & Dance and highly anticipated by our greater dance ‘family.’ We invite those who are new to attending live dance performances to check us out,” Tillman-Rayton said in the release. “This semester’s concert carries on our commitment to producing forward-thinking works and to providing pre-professional performance opportunities for Jayhawks.”
Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 7 in the Crafton-Preyer Theatre at Murphy Hall, 1530 Naismith Drive.
Tickets start at $10 for children and KU students, $20 for seniors and KU faculty and staff and $25 for adults. They are available at dance.ku.edu/spring-dance-concert-2024, at the box office in Murphy Hall, or by calling 785-864-3982.
The Friday and Sunday performances will also be available to watch via livestream. Tickets range from $10 to $20 at dance.ku.edu/streaming.
