Sunny Halsted, principal of New York Elementary School, will resign after the end of the school year to take a position in another district.

Halsted has been with Lawrence Public Schools for 16 years, including six leading New York Elementary and Montessori, according to the district. She’s accepted a principal position in the Seaman school district.

Halsted said in a news release from the district Thursday that she was thankful for her years with USD 497 and that she takes with her “many wonderful memories.”

“Not only did I have the privilege of working with many talented educators and serving wonderful families, I also feel blessed to have raised my own children in this community,” she said. “Thank you for trusting me with your children. They all hold a special place in my heart.”

Halsted’s resignation is effective June 30, pending school board approval. The search to fill the position will begin immediately, according to the district.
