The annual St. John’s Mexican Fiesta is set to return for its 42nd year on Saturday.
The event is set for 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 22 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1234 Kentucky St. in Lawrence.
It will feature celebrations of Mexican culture and heritage with food, music, dance and community.
“This year, we are excited to feature the acclaimed Pablo Sanhueza and the KC Latin Jazz All-Stars. Known for their dynamic performances and infectious rhythms, they promise to bring an unforgettable musical experience to our fiesta,” according to a news release about the event. “There will also be performances from Alejandro Lopez and Grupo Folklórico Izcalli.”
There will be a cool-down area available in the school gym. There will also be a display on the history of La Yarda and previews of the Lawrence Arts Center’s La Yarda exhibit.
La Yarda was an East Lawrence housing unit built for Mexican American railroad workers in Lawrence from 1920-51. The immersive art project commemorating La Yarda was announced in May 2022 and slated to culminate with a final installation this summer; read more about that at this link.
