Douglas County is under a heat advisory, as well as a flood watch again Tuesday following widespread flooding on Monday.

The area could see a heat index of up to 107° from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka.

Tuesday’s flood watch will be in effect from 5 p.m. through 7 a.m. Wednesday. There’s a 90% chance of precipitation Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning, as of the 12:30 p.m. forecast.

“An axis of heavy rainfall with thunderstorms looks to set up over the watch area late this afternoon into tonight. Much of this area has received heavy rain recently and could be prone to flooding with additional rounds of heavy rain,” according to NWS. “Thunderstorms with torrential rainfall may lead to amounts of 1 to 3 inches, although these totals are not expected to be widespread.”

On Monday, Lawrence-area residents reported rainfall totals ranging between roughly 3 to 6 inches. The rain gauge at the airport recorded about 2.5 inches of rain — a new record for July 1.

“Severe weather will be possible each day through the 4th of July,” according to NWS. “Uncertainty remains in exact locations and coverage of storms on Wednesday.”
