Anyone interested in learning about gravestone cleaning and monument repair is invited to an event at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence for a day of hands-on lessons in preserving historic cemeteries and stones.
The event will be hosted by Atlas Preservation as part of their 48StateTour, a nationwide gravestone preservation workshop series.
Jonathan Appell, founder and CEO of Atlas Preservation, will lead participants in hands-on lessons in preserving historic cemeteries and stones as well as common monument repair techniques, according to a news release.
The event is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 23 at Oak Hill Cemetery, 1605 Oak Hill Ave. in Lawrence.
It will begin with a walking tour to include cemetery safety and stone identification. At 10 a.m., the group will begin hands-on headstone cleaning, followed by a lunch break around noon. After lunch, the group will learn about monument repair.
The event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. Participants are encouraged to bring water bottles, snacks, insect repellant and lawn chairs. A restroom will be available at the cemetery’s office near the cemetery gates.
