City will also collect yard debris on trash pickup days

The City of Lawrence is canceling its city-load compost event set for Saturday and will instead open the compost facility to Lawrence residents only for storm debris dropoff.

There will be no charge for Lawrence residents to bring their storm debris — and proof of residency — to the compost facility from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, according to a city news release on Thursday.

“Proof of residency in Lawrence, which can include official IDs, driver’s license, or utility bill with a City of Lawrence address, is required for entry,” according to the release.

Limbs and brush should not be bundled to take to the compost facility, and sticks and branches should be smaller than 8 inches in diameter.

The facility, at 1420 E. 11th St., will also be open to residents for storm debris dropoff from 9 a.m. to noon Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 5 and 6, and from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, according to the release.

The next self-load Saturday, when people will be able to load compost or woodchips themselves, will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9.

The next city-load Saturday, where loaders will be onsite to help people load compost and woodchips, is set for Saturday, Oct. 5. Learn more on the city’s website at lawrenceks.org/swm/compost-facility/.

The city will also collect yard waste, storm debris and tree limbs on residents’ normal collection day if materials are bundled as follows, according to the release:

  • “Bundles of limbs must be placed neatly by the curb.
  • Bundles of debris and limbs must not exceed 5 feet in length and 18 inches in diameter.
  • Bundles must not weigh more than 65 pounds.
  • Bundles must be tied together with twine or string (no wire, duct tape, etc.).
  • If placing debris in City of Lawrence yard waste containers, debris must not extend more than 12 inches above the top of the container.
  • Bundles should be placed as close to the curb as possible.”

“Depending on the severity or amount of debris across town, residents may experience delays in yard waste and debris pick-up,” according to the release.
