The City of Lawrence will reopen its compost facility for the season on Saturday, March 2.

The first Saturday event of the year will be a self-load event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Residents should bring their own tools to load and unload. The facility is at 1420 E. 11th St. in Lawrence.

People can self-load up to 20 gallons of compost material or woodchips for free, or more than 20 gallons for $10. Residents can also drop off yard waste for a fee of $10 or $20, depending on the amount. Transactions are cash-only, and no bills larger than $20 will be accepted.

The facility is currently set for self-load Saturdays each week through the end of November, except for the first Saturdays of April, May, June, August and October, which are slated to be city-load days. City loaders will be on-site to help people load compost and woodchips, and there will be no self-load option on those days.

Open dates may change depending on weather or other circumstances. Double-check the calendar at lawrenceks.org/swm/compost-facility/. There are also many answers to frequently asked questions on that webpage below the calendar.

Last year, the city kept more than 15,000 tons of material out of landfills and gave out more than 6,700 tons of composted material, Megan Withiam, environmental programs technician with the City of Lawrence, said in a city news release Tuesday.
