Marcia Epstein, Lawrence mental health social worker, believes communication is the first step toward suicide prevention and that artistic expression saves lives.
That’s why Epstein organizes the annual “Words Save Lives” event in Lawrence, bringing together local artists to share their lived experiences, according to her news release. The evening of poetry, live music, storytelling, comedy, drag and more aims to open up discourse about suicide — and to spark some laughter, too.
The “Words Save Lives” program is scheduled for 6:15 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10 at Union Pacific Depot, 402 North Second St. in North Lawrence. Doors will open at 6 p.m. The event is free to attend, though donations are appreciated, and no registration is required.
Tuesday is recognized as World Suicide Prevention Day, and September is national Suicide Prevention Month.
All performers have had a relationship with suicide — whether they’ve experienced suicidal thoughts themselves, are struggling with grief due to a loss, are supporting loved ones, or work with people who are struggling with suicidal thoughts, Epstein said.
“To me, the opposite of suicide is having a life that is good to live, even with the hard stuff,” Epstein said in her release. “Here in Lawrence, KS we celebrate World Suicide Prevention Day by bringing people together, and not for a lecture. For those with hard experiences, we provide a space of safety, connection, compassion and fun. Because knowing that we are valued and that we belong are important parts of experiencing life as worth living.”
Epstein also gave a disclaimer that the event is not intended for young audiences as heavy topics of suicide and loss will be discussed.
