Reminder: City, county to host meeting on extreme weather shelter plans

An informational meeting Thursday afternoon is open to anyone who would like to learn more about providing shelter during extreme weather conditions.

The local homeless response team is asking churches and organizations to offer people a warm place to sleep this winter, rather than opening community buildings that have been used in the past.

Winter shelter could be necessary not only for people who are experiencing homelessness, but for anyone who loses power or lacks safe conditions.

The primary overnight shelter for people experiencing homelessness during winter will be the Lawrence Community Shelter, 3655 E. 25th St. More space could still be needed, which is where the city and county are hoping the community will help. University Community of Christ, First United Methodist Church, Jesus Community Church of the Nazarene and Lawrence First Church have already signed on to provide additional shelter space if needed.

The City of Lawrence is committing to have one staff person at each church or community site while it’s open, Misty Bosch-Hastings, director of the city’s homeless solutions division, said during a webinar last month. Sites will depend on volunteer support, as well.

The meeting is set for 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12 at the Flory Meeting Hall at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, 2120 Harper St. All are welcome.

“The gathering will bring together local volunteers, agencies, and community members who are deeply engaged in emergency shelter work,” according to a Wednesday news release from the city. “The event will provide a valuable opportunity to hear more details on ongoing efforts to prepare for extreme weather collaboratively.”
