After just more than two years with the department, Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Chief Rich Llewellyn is stepping down from his position, according to a news release from the city on Monday.
Llewellyn came to Lawrence from his role as assistant chief of administration for the Everett Fire Department in western Washington, starting in the position in August 2022.
Llewellyn said some family health issues prompted him and his wife to relocate and be closer to provide help if needed.
Llewellyn’s last day with LDCFM will be Friday, Dec. 6.
“Details regarding his next steps will be shared when appropriate,” according to the release.
The release highlighted some of the department’s accomplishments during Llewellyn’s tenure, including signing of new mutual aid agreements with regional fire services, advancing professional development and implementing the Mobile Integrated Health program.
“Chief Llewellyn’s dedication to enhancing Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical has left a lasting legacy of community-focused service,” City Manager Craig Owens said in the release. “We were fortunate to have Chief Llewellyn’s leadership and guidance, and we wish him all the best as he continues to serve.”
Llewellyn took the reins from Tom Fagan, who had served as interim chief of LDCFM since former chief Shaun Coffey’s retirement at the end of 2021.
