Where to get a free Thanksgiving meal in Lawrence

Turkey Day is just around the corner. Here are some places to get a free meal in Lawrence.

LINK, the Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, is serving its annual community meal in downtown Lawrence. The meal is open to everyone.

Dinner will be served at 1 p.m. Thursday at 221 W. 10th St., which is in the basement of the First Christian Church at 10th and Kentucky streets.

There are stairs leading to the external basement door, which is on the north side of the building. Deb Engstrom, coordinator for the annual meal, said if someone needs wheelchair access to the dining room, they can call LINK at 785-331-3663 for someone to escort them through the church.

LINK quickly filled all its volunteer slots for this year’s holiday meal and will not be able to accept drop-in volunteers, Engstrom said.

The volunteer-run kitchen also serves lunches at 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays for anyone who needs a meal, and it needs volunteers year-round. Learn more about LINK on its website at linklawrence.org.

Sandwich Bowl will offer a free Thanksgiving dinner, with a menu to include slow-roasted turkey, garlic mashed potatoes, turkey gravy, stuffing, green bean casserole, homemade cranberry sauce, rolls and cookies donated by Eileen’s Colossal Cookies, according to the restaurant’s Facebook event page.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 28 at 4821 W. Sixth St., on the southeast side of the intersection at Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive.

The to-go meals are first-come, first-served. No donations are required to eat, but there will be a donation jar on hand for folks who’d like to help with the cost of supplies.

The restaurant asks people who plan to show up to mark themselves as “going” on the event page at this link so they have some estimate of how much food to make.
