Whether it is decorating cookie ornaments, hand-dipping beeswax candles, meeting the magical Queen Winter or experiencing horse rides, there are numerous opportunities for hands-on fun as well as shopping local vendors at an upcoming holiday event that has been a yearly tradition in the Lawrence community for more than 20 years.

Winterlight Faire, held annually at Prairie Moon Waldorf School in North Lawrence, is a family-friendly holiday open house that features unique gifts, food, entertainment and crafts for children and adults.

This year’s Winterlight Faire will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14 at the school’s campus, 1853 East 1600 Road, about five minutes from the East Lawrence I-70 exit. There is a suggested donation of $25-100 sliding scale per family to cover the costs of crafting materials as well as to help generate funds for the school.

There will be children’s puppet shows and horse rides throughout the festival, as well as food and beverages available for purchase from Uplift Coffee truck and ThisN’That food truck.

As the only Waldorf school in the state, Prairie Moon Waldorf School is a one-of-a-kind educational opportunity in Kansas. Now more than ever, a nature-based, screen-free education is valuable and important to a child’s development. Waldorf education, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, emphasizes educating the “whole child” through a curriculum that promotes a balance of physical, mental and spiritual well-being in students.

Prairie Moon offers full-time education for children ages 3 through eighth grade. For the youngest children, Prairie Moon also offers an ongoing “Sweet Peas Garden” parent-child class on Fridays for infants and toddlers (birth-3), which provides a joyful, supportive and educational break from the routine of the work week for both young children and their caregivers. More information about the upcoming sessions, which begin in January, is at prairiemoon.org/events
