State health officials have issued a boil water advisory for the Douglas County Rural Water District No. 6 public water supply system.

The district covers a northern portion of Douglas County but does not include the cities of Lecompton or Lawrence.

The advisory took effect Monday and will remain in effect “until the conditions that placed the system at risk of bacterial contamination are resolved,” according to a news release from Douglas County. Kansas Department of Health and Environment officials issued the advisory “because of a waterline break resulting in a loss of pressure in the distribution system. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.”

Any water to be consumed or used in food preparation should be boiled for one minute before drinking or use. In cooking, water should come to a rolling boil for one minute before adding food.

Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled, but “Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested,” according to KDHE.

Consumers can contact the water system at 785-887-6225 or KDHE at 785-296-5514 with any questions. There’s additional info on KDHE’s website at this link.
