Lawrence community members gathered Wednesday at the Union Pacific Depot to “stand together for freedom and against tyranny.”
Some Lawrencians wanted to travel to Topeka to participate in protests happening at capitols in all 50 states Wednesday, but roads were icy and unsafe.
“Thousands of demonstrators gathered in cities across the U.S. on Wednesday to protest the Trump administration’s early actions, decrying everything from the president’s immigration crackdown to his rollback of transgender rights and a proposal to forcibly transfer Palestinians from the Gaza Strip,” the Associated Press summarized.
Jerry Jost invited folks to the North Lawrence depot in a public Facebook post. “We can then share with our friends across our nation that we stand together for freedom and against tyranny,” he wrote.
Nearly three dozen people showed up with signs bearing messages such as “We the People will resist”; “Their ignorance is only exceeded by their cruelty”; “Love wins” and “The world is watching.” They also encouraged people to make their voices heard by contacting their legislators.
