Sunrise Project has found a new space where it can continue to couple social connections with food equity.

The nonprofit will soon relocate to Centenary United Methodist Church, 245 N. Fourth St. in North Lawrence.

“This move entails a partnership with Centenary UMC based on the shared values of social justice, inclusivity and social connection,” Sunrise Project said in a news release Tuesday.

The space has a large fellowship hall, kitchen, administrative space and an outdoor area for gardening, according to the release.

“We are so grateful to the congregation at Centenary for opening their space to us,” Melissa Freiburger, Sunrise Project co-founder and executive director, said via email Tuesday. “This is an exciting new chapter for Sunrise and we can’t wait to grow new roots in this north Lawrence location!”

The organization will begin its move in March. All site-based programming will be paused starting March 1. Sunrise hopes to offer onsite programming in the new location by late April or early May, according to the release.

Sunrise announced in August that it would have to move from its current headquarters at 1501 Learnard Ave. because the property owner planned to put the location on the market. Freiburger said the mission will continue.

“Sunrise Project is much more than one program or one building,” she said in November. “We are relationships, connection, joy and community care.”

Sunrise is planning a nacho night community potluck for 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26 at its current location.

Sunrise Project’s new mailing address is P.O. Box 143, Lawrence, KS 66044. Its phone number is still 785-865-1618. Stay up to date on the nonprofit’s Instagram, @thesunriseproject, and Facebook page.
