Post updated at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20:
A 23-year-old Lawrence man is hospitalized in critical condition following a shooting Wednesday night, police say.
“We understand seven people were in a car when the suspect was recklessly handling a gun and discharged it, striking the 23-year-old victim,” police said in an update Thursday. The car was in the parking lot of Casey’s General Store at 1703 W. Sixth St.
Lawrence police were dispatched to LMH Health, where the man had been dropped off at the emergency room, just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.
The man was transferred to a trauma center where he remained in critical condition Thursday, according to police. They did not release the injured man’s name.
“Police did not find the car at the hospital nor all seven people when they arrived,” according to LPD’s update. “We learned the car was likely headed to Eudora. Eudora Police quickly found the car near 13th and Cherry Street with only the driver inside.”
The driver, a 22-year-old Lawrence man, was later arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery. Police found the firearm allegedly used in the shooting, they said.
Police had said Thursday morning that “Based on the leads we have generated thus far, there is no reason to believe there is an ongoing threat to the public related to this incident.”
