Area artists will open their studios, homes and creative spaces to guests during Lawrence’s free, self-guided, open-studio tour, Art Spaces.
The event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 3 and 4. Each location will provide a unique experience in which visitors will be immersed in the arts.
Some venues will provide demonstrations; others will have displays, hands-on experiences or viewing of finished and unfinished works only found within the artists’ studios.
An open-studio event allows visitors to see more of an artist’s work than would normally be seen at a gallery exhibition or an art fair. Studies, unfinished works and unframed pieces can be seen alongside the artists’ newest works at many of the 2-D artists’ studios.
Celia Smith, who is originally from Spain, has been painting in Lawrence since the 1960s, and her home and studio are filled with decades of work.
During Art Spaces, Art Emergency at 721 E. Ninth St. will offer a chance for visitors to peek into artists’ studios, as well as visit with Lawrence Art Guild members who have set up within the larger open warehouse. More than 20 artists, including Clark Fulton, Kim Brook, Liz Campbell, Paul Punzo and Nan Renbarger will be in this location. Martha Kenton will be demonstrating her jewelry beading technique, and Shanna Wagner will be there to explain the processes she uses in making mosaics.
Two studios in close proximity to Art Emergency are oil painter Patrick Schlotterback at SeedCo Studios and Kyla Strid at her ceramic studio, joined by Shantel Wright-Hancock, Twiggy Cercy and Hollie Rice.
For those wanting to try their hands at being creative, Susan Poer will offer hands-on activities. Poer is an artist who believes in the transformative power of creativity, and she would love to share with you the many media she works in.
Art Spaces hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 3, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 4.
