Courtney Ellis, a Lawrence Public Schools alum and educator, has been named as the next assistant principal and athletics director of Billy Mills Middle School.
Ellis is an alum of Hillcrest Elementary, West Junior High and Lawrence High School, graduating with the Class of 2009, according to a Monday news release from the school district.
She earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Kansas and her master’s through Fort Hays State University.
Ellis came back to the district in 2018 as an academic interventionist at Deerfield and Quail Run, then taught at Schwegler and Quail Run. She’s currently a student support facilitator at West Middle School.
“Being a product of Lawrence and USD 497, I’m deeply honored and excited to step into the role of assistant principal and athletic director at Billy Mills Middle School,” Ellis said in the release. “As an educator of color, I’m especially passionate about serving the diverse community that shaped me, and I’m truly humbled to have the opportunity to give back in such a meaningful way.”
Ellis will fill the role Sara Murray is leaving to become principal of Quail Run Elementary. Both position changes are effective July 1.
