As cardboard recycling dumpsters at local grocery stores have been filling up fast, the City of Lawrence has added a new location at the Douglas County Fairgrounds to help meet the demand.
There are currently cardboard dumpsters at Checkers at 2300 Louisiana St.; Hy-Vee at 3504 Clinton Parkway; and Dillons at 4701 W. Sixth St. — “all of which see regular high use and frequent overflow,” according to a news release from the city.
“By adding a new dumpster at the Fairgrounds, the Solid Waste team hopes to improve access and alleviate congestion at existing sites,” according to the release.
All the dumpsters are free and open to the public. The fairgrounds are at 2120 Harper St. on the eastern side of town.
“This is a simple step that helps us make recycling more convenient and keeps our sites cleaner,” Brandon Spencer, solid waste supervisor for the city, said in the release. “We want to thank our residents for continuing to recycle responsibly and for supporting Lawrence’s sustainability goals.”
Although items like cereal boxes are OK for blue home recycling carts, they should not be placed in the large cardboard dumpsters. The dumpsters are only for corrugated cardboard, such as traditional moving or delivery boxes, and items should be broken down and flattened.
