The half-mile stretch of 19th Street between Haskell Avenue and Harper Street will close to traffic starting Tuesday, July 15.

The closure is related to storm, sanitary and water main improvements in the neighborhood north of 19th Street and Maple Lane. The next phase of the project will extend current construction south and fully close the intersection of 19th and Maple, according to a city news release.

Eastbound and westbound traffic on 19th Street will be detoured to 23rd Street during the closure.

19th Street will reopen starting Friday, July 25 for Douglas County Fair traffic. Maple Lane will be closed north and south of 19th Street, but drivers will be able to access 19th Street to get to and from the fairgrounds.

Workers will then close 19th Street again in early August.

The project will also include improvements to sidewalks and accessibility in the area and a new bus stop near 19th and Harper streets, according to the release.

The project was initially anticipated to continue through summer 2026, but it is running ahead of schedule, according to the city. More information about the project is available at lawrenceks.org/mso/maple-lane.

Overnight work planned at 9th and Iowa intersection

City crews will begin closing outside lanes of Iowa Street and Ninth Street on Wednesday, July 16.

Starting at 8 p.m. Wednesday, northbound drivers on Iowa will not be able to turn east onto Ninth, and southbound drivers on Iowa will not be able to turn west onto Ninth, according to the city. Closed lanes will reopen at 6 a.m. Thursday, July 17.

At 8 p.m. Thursday, crews will return to close the inside lanes of Iowa Street. One lane of traffic will remain open for both directions on Iowa, but Ninth Street will be closed at Iowa. The intersection will reopen at 6 a.m. Friday, July 18.

The city anticipates the work being done Friday, pending weather or other delays, according to the release.
