Road, lane, parking lot and intersection closures are set for numerous sites across Lawrence in the near future.
Here’s a quick roundup, with information via the City of Lawrence’s Friday traffic update.
Bob Billings Parkway between Wakarusa and Kasold
There will be lane closures on Bob Billings Parkway between Wakarusa Drive and Kasold Drive “to relocate facilities” for the city’s Bob Billings Improvement Project.
Contractors with AT&T will close outside lanes of traffic starting Monday, Sept. 22. “The lane closures will move as contractor progresses through the project,” according to the city.
The city anticipates that part of the work will be done and lane closures will end by the beginning of November. The entire project is anticipated to take about a year, pending weather and other delays, according to the city.
The improvement project will include street reconstruction from Monterey Way to Kasold Drive with new pavement with medians, a new shared-use path and sidewalk on one side of the roadway, storm sewer upgrades and water main replacement, according to the city’s website.
It will also include pavement rehabilitation, curb repairs and upgrades to accessible ramps from Wakarusa Drive to Monterey Way.
27th Street and Haskell Avenue
The east side of the 27th Street and Haskell Avenue intersection will be closed starting Monday, Sept. 22.
Contractors will close the intersection as part of the waterline replacement project from 23rd Street to 28th Terrace on Haskell.
The city anticipates the closure will end Friday, Oct. 3, pending weather or other delays.
West Second and Michigan streets
Contractors will close access to West Second Street to the west of Michigan Street beginning Monday, Sept. 22.
This is the second phase of a maintenance project in the area. West Second Street is currently closed to through traffic between McDonald Drive and Michigan Street; it will remain so during the new phase, according to the city, but “No local traffic will be impacted.”
The closure is anticipated to end in mid-October, pending weather or other delays.
Kasold Drive lane closure
Contractors with Campus Communications will close the southbound outside lane of Kasold Drive for fiber installation starting at Clinton Parkway and moving south to 31st Street as the work progresses.
The closures will start Monday, Sept. 22, and the city anticipates the project will be concluded by the beginning of November, pending weather or other delays.
Burcham Park south parking lot, sidewalk
The south parking lot and nearby sidewalk at Burcham Park will be closed starting Monday, Sept. 29 to ensure safety of visitors as city contractors begin a Kansas River dredging project.
“This project will intermittently use excavators in the river to remove sediments around the water intakes for the water treatment plant before hauling them away,” according to the city.
The city expects the project to end Nov. 2, pending delays. Burcham Park Trail will remain open throughout the course of the work.
