The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Lawrence Police Department will soon collect expired and unused prescription and over-the-counter medications from the public for safe disposal.
The sheriff’s office’s drive-thru dropoff site will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 in the parking lot outside the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St.
The dropoff site is free, anonymous and open to the public.
“The goal behind National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is to provide a safe disposal of unneeded medications from homes to prevent medication misuse or opioid addiction, for example,” according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. “Using a Take Back site also eliminates improper environmental disposal into the water supply. All items collected are delivered to the DEA to be safely destroyed.”
The sheriff’s office cannot accept needles, sharps or inhalers, according to the release. Veterinary drugs are accepted. Liquid products such as cough syrup should remain sealed in the original container.
LPD will collect drugs at its headquarters at 5100 Overland Drive in West Lawrence, also from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
