A Lawrence woman was killed in a “near head-on crash” Monday evening in Lawrence, according to the police department.

The crash occurred just before 7 p.m. Monday just west of 23rd and Harper streets.

Officers believe the woman, 75-year-old Bonnie Susan Hernandez, was traveling eastbound, crossed into the westbound lanes and struck an SUV, according to a social media post from the department.

Investigators believe Hernandez had suffered a medical emergency just before the crash, according to the post.

“A witness was performing CPR on the woman when officers arrived,” according to the post. “Officers took over, then arriving medics continued life saving measures. She was declared deceased at the scene.”

The people in the SUV suffered minor injuries but did not go to the hospital, according to the post.

LPD did not release the woman’s name Monday night in order to allow family members time to notify others.
