Lawrence police will have increased traffic enforcement to be on the lookout for people driving impaired during the holidays.
Police and law enforcement across the state will join the “Taking Down DUI” campaign, which will run from Friday, Dec. 26 through Friday, Jan. 2.
New Year’s Eve is one of the deadliest days of the year for impaired driving, according to a news release from the police department.
Funding for the special enforcement comes from the Kansas Department of Transportation.
Under Kansas law, a first DUI (driving under the influence) conviction generally comes with at least 48 hours but up to six months in jail; fines up to $1,000, not including attorney fees, court costs and more; ignition interlock (blowing into a machine before your vehicle will start — which also costs more money); a substance abuse evaluation; a suspended license; and more.
Lawrence Transit will not operate on Christmas or on New Year’s Day. However, outside of those days, Lawrence Transit On Demand is an option for anyone in city limits. You can book free trips from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and from midnight to 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
The app to book a ride is available on Google Play and the App Store. Riders can also call 785-312-7054 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday to make a reservation. Learn more and see answers to FAQs at this link. (The on-demand service will have a $3 fare next year, but it will not go into effect until March.)
Uber and Lyft also both operate in Lawrence.
