Lawrence High School students are celebrating success in a prestigious regional art competition, and many of their works will advance to the national level.
Seventeen LHS students earned nearly 60 awards in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards midwest regional competition, announced late last week. Their grand total of 57 this year surpasses the 39 awards they and their classmates netted last year.
Their honors include 22 Gold Keys, which represent the top 5% of entries, according to teacher Todd Poteet. Their works were selected from more than 4,000 entries “by some of the foremost leaders in the visual arts,” Poteet said in an email sharing the news.

“Jurors look for works that exemplify the Awards’ core values: originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision,” Poteet said.
