Students of Haskell Indian Nations University are organizing a protest against ICE following the arrests of five Lawerence community members earlier this week.
The “ICE Out” protest is set for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20 at South Park in downtown Lawrence.
“Join us for a peaceful protest,” a flyer about the event states. “Let us stand together and fight for what is right! No one is illegal on stolen land!”
The protest follows reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement sightings and arrests Tuesday. Volunteers with Sanctuary Alliance, a Lawrence-based collective that advocates for immigrant rights, said they confirmed five people were detained. (Read more about that in this article.)
The volunteer said the best thing community members could do is to continue to report possible ICE sightings through their hotline, as opposed to sending messages on social media or emails. The hotline is the best way to get ahold of volunteers in an urgent situation.
You can reach the Sanctuary Alliance hotline at 785-289-5143. Somos Lawrence, a grassroots organization supporting non-English speakers, also operates a hotline that people can reach at 785-813-1098.
