New owners will soon open Mass Street Plant Co. in the space that was previously home to Jungle House in downtown Lawrence.
Jungle House abruptly closed three weeks ago, announcing on social media that March 31 would be its final day of business and urging customers to use their gift cards and get a plant or two.
West Bottoms Plant Company in Kansas City aims to continue the community built by Jungle House by bringing Mass Street Plant Co., a sister store to its Kansas City location, to the space at 6 E. Seventh St. with a soft opening set for Saturday, May 2.
Austin Mosier, who owns West Bottoms Plant Company with Tristan Carlson, and Josh Ricley said they have been working closely with former Jungle House owners Rachel and Jhami Guffey to prioritize preserving jobs and the community the plant shop grew in Lawrence. Ricley was a longtime employee of Jungle House and will be manager of the new store.
In a news release, the business said it is bringing back members of the Jungle House team to help maintain familiar faces and continuity while supporting jobs in the community.
“Like so many in Lawrence, we were deeply saddened by the closing of Jungle House,” Mosier said in the release. “It was more than a plant shop — it was built with genuine love for this community. We have so much respect for what was created here, and we don’t take stepping into this space lightly.”
The shop will be home to a smaller version of Kansas City’s ADHDIY Craft Cafe with initial seating for 20 guests, according to the release.
